WTF Is an ETF?

02:05
Mar 7 -- There are now over 6,000 ETFs on 60 exchanges and ETFs exist for everything from corporate bonds to gold bars to oil futures. Like the USB port or a gas pump, ETFs have basically standardized the entire universe of investing so that everything under the sun now trades like shares of Apple. But what, exactly is an ETF and why have they become so popular? Bloomberg explains in this short video. Like this video? 5 Mistakes Investors Make with ETFs | Fidelity

04:43
In this video, learn about the five biggest mistakes that investors make when buying ETFs, or exchange-traded funds. To learn the basics about ETFs, visit https://www.fidelity.com/learning-center/investment-products/etf/overview. To get started investing with ETFs, visit https://www.fidelity.com/etfs/overview To see more videos from Fidelity Investments, subscribe to: https://www.youtube.com/fidelityinvestments Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/fidelityinvestments Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/fidelity Google+: https://plus.google.com/+fidelity LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/fidelity-investments --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Let’s talk about the five biggest mistakes investors can make when buying exchange-traded funds. ETFs can be good tools for investors - when used appropriately. But with any investment, there are always things to watch out for. Number 1: Buying the Hot New Thing More than 100 new ETF products launch each year, many of them chasing the latest hot trend. Cloud computing, driverless cars, 3-D printing … you name it, there’s an ETF for that. Buying into the latest hot theme might make you big returns, but take care: These product launches may come after there has been a run up in the market. Buying at the top can be painful on the way down. Number 2: Buying Something You Don’t Understand The only thing worse than chasing the hottest trend is buying something you don’t understand. ETFs have taken institutional strategies and made them push-button-easy for everyday investors to access. Want access to commodity futures? There’s an ETF for that. 300% leverage? 200% short? Interest-rate carry plays? Yes to all. But just because you can buy something easily doesn’t mean you should. All of these funds may be good tools, but only if you know how to use them correctly. Number 3: Thinking All ETFs Are Created Equal Consider China. At the start of 2014, there were more than a dozen broad-based China ETFs. For example, had you chosen PGJ, the PowerShares Golden Dragon China ETF, at the start of the year, you would have lost more than 7% of your money. Had you instead chosen ASHR, the Deutsche Xtrackers Harvest CSI 300 China A-Shares ETF, you would have earned a 51% return. Both are “China ETFs.” Both can provide big, diversified portfolios. But ASHR has significant exposure to Chinese Ashares—largely consumer-focused stocks listed and traded on the domestic Chinese market— which performed spectacularly well in 2014. Don’t assume all ETFs are created equal. Just because two ETFs cover the same market doesn’t mean they provide the same exposure or returns. There’s no guarantee which fund will perform better in the future. But if you wanted to invest last year in the growth of the Chinese consumer and the domestic investor base there, a little bit of research would have gone a long way. Number 4: Trading…Just Because You Can Trading is central to ETFs. It’s right there in the name. But just because you can trade an ETF intraday doesn’t mean you should. Emotions are often an investor’s worst enemy. You zig when you should zag; you sell at the bottom and buy at the top. We all do sometimes. The trouble is ETFs make that even easier than traditional mutual funds. ETFs’ intraday liquidity can be great when you need to get into or out of the market quickly. But those situations are rare. Number 5: Only Using Market Orders When you do invest, consider using a limit order versus a market order. Market orders are instructions to buy or sell securities at the best possible price right now. That can work well for the most liquid ETFs, but as you move beyond the top dozen ETFs, you can find yourself getting trades executed at prices you don’t really want. Using a limit order means you agree to buy an ETF at a certain price or below, and sell it at a certain price or above. A limit order puts the control back in your hands and can help you set the price on your terms. Learn from these common mistakes to help avoid making them yourself. ETF É O MELHOR INVESTIMENTO EM AÇÕES? Entenda os ETFs de forma simples!

07:11

How Do You Trade ETFs? | Fidelity

02:53
This video will teach you the basics of trading ETFs. Find out more about exchange-traded funds with us at the https://www.fidelity.com/learning-center/investment-products/etf/overview To see more videos from Fidelity Investments, subscribe to: https://www.youtube.com/fidelityinvestments Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/fidelityinvestments Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/fidelity Google+: https://plus.google.com/+fidelity LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/fidelity-investments ---------------------------------------------------- How do you trade ETFs? It’s a great question. The fact that ETFs trade on an exchange like stocks is one of their biggest selling points. It means you can trade any time the market’s open, rather than waiting until the end of the day like you do with traditional mutual funds. You can also trade an ETF the same way you would trade any stock: You can buy it on margin, if you have that feature in your account. You can even short sell most ETFs. But this liquidity comes with several costs which are important to keep in mind when you’re investing in ETFs. Let’s talk more about two of these costs…The first cost is obvious: the commission. Like with any stock, you have to pay a commission when you buy or sell an ETF. This can really add up if you trade a lot. Imagine, for instance, that each month you invest $1,000 into a basket of five different ETFs. Five times $7.95 per trade is close to 40 dollars, or 4% of your total investment. The good news is that most brokerage firms now offer a certain number of ETFs commission-free. You should consider these carefully, as saving on commissions can be a big deal. The spread is the difference between where someone is willing to buy an ETF (or a stock) at and where someone is willing to sell. For instance, if an ETF is trading at $20/share, you might see that it has an “average spread” of “$0.01.” That means you can buy the ETF for $20.01, but you can only sell it for $20.00. Another ETF might show an average spread of “$0.25,” which means you have to buy the ETF for $20.25, but you can only sell it for $20.00. The smaller the spread, the better. Lastly, it’s smart to use good basic trading practices. In general, you should consider using limit orders which are instructions to buy or sell securities at a specific price or better. But remember, if your limit is set to something unrealistic, or if the market’s moving quickly, you’ll need to monitor and adjust your limits to make sure you get your trade executed and you get the price you want – or better. So let’s review a few key points when it comes to trading ETFs: • Remember commissions. • Look at the spread. • Consider using limit orders. ETFs now make up about a quarter of all the volume on the New York Stock Exchange, so plenty of investors are trading ETFs. With a little care and effort, you can too! ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds) | by Wall Street Survivor

01:48
What is an ETF? Learn more at: https://www.wallstreetsurvivor.com/register Like a mutual fund, an ETF represents a mix of underlying securities. Unlike a mutual fund, an ETF is traded on the stock market, meaning investors can purchase shares of an ETF to buy and sell at will throughout the day. The most popular ETFs are index ETFs, which track a market index, sector, or commodity (like gold). The value of an ETF increases or decreases in tandem with the index or security selection it tracks. ETFs enable the diversification of mutual funds but cost less to own, and are becoming increasingly popular. To reduce your risk, you should invest in more than just one stock. But it can be time consuming to research many stocks to invest in. ETFs can solve this problem for you. An ETF is a basket of tens, hundreds and sometimes thousands of companies, bonds and commodities in one fund unified under one particular investment theme. Maybe you think Tech is booming, but you don’t want to invest in just one company. Or, maybe you would like to have exposure to some foreign investments. There is an ETF for virtually any segment of the market. What is an ETF? | Definition of ETF (Exchange Traded Funds) | Introduction to ETFs

What is an ETF? Well, it’s a mutual fund too. It’s a pooled investment vehicle that offers diversified exposure to a particular area of the market. It can invest in stocks, bonds, commodities, currencies, options or a blend of assets. Investors buy shares, which represent a proportional interest in the pooled assets. It’s a mutual fund in every aspect … except one. And that’s a big one, which is hinted at in its very name: exchange-traded funds. How to invest in ETFs

10:31
11/9/2017 Webcast: ETFs What you need to know How can you purchase Vanguard ETFs® (exchange-traded funds), and is there a particular time of day when it’s best to buy or sell an ETF? Vanguard investing experts, Josh Hirt and Rich Powers, describe how and when to add ETFs to your portfolio. Important Information All investing is subject to risk, including the possible loss of the money you invest. This webcast is for your educational purposes only. We recommend that you consult a tax or financial advisor about your individual situation. Diversification does not ensure a profit or protect against a loss. Investments in stocks or bonds issued by non-U.S. companies are subject to risks including country/regional risk and currency risk. Vanguard ETF Shares are not redeemable with the issuing Fund other than in very large aggregations worth millions of dollars. Instead, investors must buy and sell Vanguard ETF Shares in the secondary market and hold those shares in a brokerage account. In doing so, the investor may incur brokerage commissions and may pay more than net asset value when buying and receive less than net asset value when selling. For more information about Vanguard funds or Vanguard ETFs, visit https://vgi.vg/2zIetY9 to obtain a prospectus or, if available, a summary prospectus. Investment objectives, risks, charges, expenses, and other important information are contained in the prospectus; read and consider it carefully before investing. © 2017 The Vanguard Group, Inc. Vanguard has opened a new avenue for investors to get involved with the stock market, with relatively minimal risk through diversification but gives you the opportunity to earn 7-10% annually on your money. 🔴 *VIP Membership Group - * 🔴 View my portfolio & every single trade I make! Join now ► http://bit.ly/2Gk9JfW Traditionally, if you wanted to invest in the broader market like the S&P 500, you would have to invest in a Mutual Fund. However mutual funds have a lot of negatives and issues. They are a clunky product and difficult to follow and understand, they are not easy to buy or sell, and worst of all - they charge large management fees - usually in the range of 1% to 3%. Typically for a Mutual Fund, you work with a financial adviser to pick out "the best fund for you" - but in reality, you're picking out the best fund for them as they get a commission depending on what fund you end up making an investment in. Those high management fees are fees that they get a cut out of - so they will almost always push mutual fund products onto you even if it isn't the best investment for you. What I also don't like about Mutual Funds like I mentioned, is that when you want to buy it, it usually takes a day or two to process. Same with selling it - and in this day and age - there's no reason to go down that route at all! This is where ETF's come in to save the day - specifically VOO. ETF's provide you the same exposure (or better) than a mutual fund can, but offer much less management fees - saving you hundreds, thousands, or tens of thousands over your investment career. ETF's are able to be traded just like stocks - you can buy and sell them at any time that the market is open, and you instantly have exposure to the ETF. This ETF we're talking about today, VOO ETF, is one that Vanguard offers and is one that I believe is the best ETF for any investor because the management fee is 0.04%, it has enough liquidity that you can buy/sell at any time, and it's a simple product that tracks the S&P 500. If you believe the top 500 companies in the US will succeed and grow even bigger over the long term, there's no better investment on that bet than to go with VOO. Now, VTI has also come as a close runner up to this - which is another ETF offered by Vanguard. VTI encompasses the total market, and gives you exposure to something like 2000 stocks - including small caps, medium caps, and large cap stocks. If you feel that the exposure to the S&P 500 isn't enough, and you want exposure to all companies in the US that are publicly traded, the Vanguard VTI ETF is the way to go - as this also only offers a management fee of 0.04% - absolutely amazing. I hope this clears things up on why ETF's are a better investment tool than Mutual Funds, and I hope this video helps save you even $1 - because that is my goal here - to save you money! I also have a very interesting story to share of a recent visit that I had with my local bank and financial adviser. Dividend Stocks Vs. Dividend ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds)

15:33
You like dividend checks. However, you are unsure whether you should pursue individual dividend-paying stocks or dividend-focused ETFs (exchange traded funds). Today's video, a response to a subscriber question, compares and contrasts individual dividend growth stocks versus dividend mutual funds (ETFs), through my personal lens. While I cannot answer this question for others, I can share my personal pros and cons when I compare the two, and how I decided to proceed in my personal stock portfolio. Specifically, I cover: * Two specific ETF (exchange traded fund) examples from a major ETF mutual fund family. * Why starting yields may be a bit too low with ETFs. * Why I love the control that individual, dividend stocks offer. (And, their lack of ongoing fees is nice too.) * How one can derive more value (when stocks are "on sale") via individual stocks versus mutual funds (which offer a basket of stocks). This is a critical point. The stock market, in my opinion, is not efficient. By holding individual dividend stocks, I get to buy bargains all the time. * When ETFs and mutual funds may make sense (namely retirement accounts where individual stocks are not an option, or those that have smaller portfolios without the prospect of large-scale growth). * How I hope and dream that everyone watching has a million dollar (or more) dividend stock portfolio, one that pays massive cash flow. Today's video is a bit contrarian, and that's ok. My goal is one of early financial freedom and massive passive income. Since my goals are a bit unconventional, my personal finance strategy has been a bit unconventional too.
