Resources - Types of resources, Uses of resources

07:19
What is a Resource? A resource is a source or supply from where benefits are produced. An item becomes a resource with time and developing technology. Typically resources are materials, energy, services, staff, knowledge, or other assets that are transformed to produce benefit and in the process may be consumed or made unavailable. Benefits of resource utilization may include increased wealth, proper functioning of a system, or enhanced wellbeing. Types of resources: NATURAL RESOURCES: Natural resources are derived from the environment. Many natural resources are essential for human survival, while others are used for satisfying human desire. Conservation is the management of natural resources with the goal of sustainability. Natural resources may be further classified in different ways 1. Based on Origin: In biology and ecology a resource is defined as a substance that is required by a living organism for normal growth, maintenance, and reproduction. Biotic & abiotic resources • Biotic Resources are obtained from biosphere and have life such as human beings, flora and fauna, fisheries, livestock etc. • Abiotic Resources are composed of non-living things, e.g., rocks and metals. 2. Based on the availability : Renewable & non-renewable resources • Renewable Resources are infinite resources which can be renewed or reproduced by physical, chemical or mechanical processes, e.g., solar and wind energy, water, forests and wildlife, etc. • Non-Renewable Resources are formed over a substantially long geological time, e.g., minerals and fossil fuels. 3. Based on the stage of development : • Potential Resources: Potential resources are known to exist and may be used in the future. For example, petroleum may exist in many parts of India and Kuwait that have sedimentary rocks, but until the time it is actually drilled out and put into use, it remains a potential resource. • Actual / Developed Resources are resources that have been surveyed and determined for utilization both qualitatively and quantitatively. The development of resources depends on technology and level of their feasibility. • Stock resource: refers to materials in the environment which cannot be developed profitably because of lack of technology. • Reserve resource : part of the actual resource that can be developed profitably with available technology is called a reserve resource 4. resources based on nature of ownership: • Individual Resources are resources that are owned privately by individuals, e.g. • land, houses, plantations, ponds, water in wells Community Resources are resources accessible to all the members of a community. Examples: • grazing grounds, burial grounds, public parks, picnic spots etc. • National Resources are all the resources that belong to a nation. Examples: • roadways, railways, canals, minerals, water resources, forests, wildlife, etc. • land within the political boundaries. • International Resources are regulated by certain international institutions. These include: The oceanic resources beyond 200 km of the Exclusive Economic Zone, which belong to open ocean and no individual country can utilize these without the concurrence of international institutions. 5. Labour or human resources: In economics, labour or human resources refers to the human effort in production of goods and rendering of services. Human resources can be defined in terms of skills, energy, talent, abilities, or knowledge. 6. Capital or infrastructure resources: capital refers to already-produced durable goods used in production of goods or services. In essence, capital refers to human-made resources created using knowledge and expertise based on utility or perceived value. Common examples of capital include buildings, machinery, railways, roads, and ships. 7. Tangible v/s intangible resources: While tangible resources such as equipment have actual physical existence, intangible resources such as corporate images, brands and patents, and other intellectual property exist in abstraction. Uses of Resources: • Typically resources cannot be consumed in their original form, but rather through resource development they must be processed into more usable commodities and usable things. • With increasing population, the demand for resources is increasing. There are marked differences in resource distribution and associated economic inequality between regions or countries. • Sustainable development is a pattern of resource use that aims to meet human needs while preserving the environment. • Sustainable development means that we should exploit our resources carefully to meet our present requirement without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. • The practice of the three R's – reduce, reuse and recycle must be followed in order to save and extend the availability of resources.

James explains: http://bit.ly/1Pzy1k5 ____________ European economies were so closely connected that some people expected they have to avoid another world war or destroy their finances, but in fact World War I had taught them how to prepare for just such a scenario. Germany, France, and Great Britain all invested in their military before war broke out. When evaluating these economies to see how war would affect them, we look at four main factors: GDP, population, territorial extent, and per capita income. Broadly, this helps us determine how resilient, expansive, self-sufficient, and developed a nation is. All of those factors determine how a nation must conduct its war. For example, the vast territorial holdings of the British Empire meant that they had vast resources to draw upon but needed a long time to mobilize them, which helped Germany determine that they needed to strike fast and win big if they hoped to win the war before Britain's full resources came into play. Japan also estimated that they could win a war in the Pacific if they managed to win before the US had been involved for more than 6 months. These calculations drove the early strategies of the Axis powers, but the participation of the US would later prove to be a crucial factor. ____________ BONUS! Are We Running Out of Resources?

04:08
Prof. Steve Horwitz addresses the common belief that the world is running out of natural resources. Instead, there are economic reasons why we will never run out of many resources. In a free market system, prices signal scarcity. So as a resource becomes more scarce, it becomes more expensive, which incentivizes people to use less of it and develop new alternatives, or to find new reserves of that resource that were previously unknown or unprofitable. We have seen throughout history that the human mind's ability to innovate, coupled with a free market economic system, is an unlimited resource that can overcome the limitations we perceive with natural resources. Water Resources

11:38
005 - Water Resources In this video Paul Andersen explains how water is unequally distributed around the globe through the hydrologic cycles. Seawater is everywhere but is not useful without costly desalination. TRAINS : Workers & Resources Soviet Republic

54:20
Workers and Resources Soviet Republic has, so far shown us industry, today it brings trains. Multiple trains. And track laying. This is a let's play series featuring gameplay from Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic. Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic is the ultimate real-time soviet-themed city builder tycoon game. Construct your own republic and transform a poor country into a rich industrial superpower! Manage all aspects of your own republic with planned economy, including mining resources, manufacturing goods, construction, investments, and citizens too. Create your own industrial complexes with loading and unloading stations, storage, warehouses, and factories. Build the infrastructure and manage its traffic, including roads, railways, sidewalks, conveyors, wiring, and pipelines. Wisely place and connect factories, houses and warehouses, and make the most efficient connections. Plan and build the living areas with everything your citizens may need to live their happy life, such as playgrounds, cinema s, taverns, and shops. Send your citizens to the mine to get coal, iron and other natural resources; or send them to the fields to pick up the crops; or take them to factories to produce manufactured goods. Sell and purchase resources and goods from western countries or other soviet countries to get dollars or rubles and buy the products or resources you need ... or invest in new infrastructure or buildings. Enjoy authentic soviet buildings and vehicles, as well as realistic landscapes of the 60's to the 90's. Play the way you want! You can focus on getting natural resources or products and trade them for money; or you can build a self-sufficient republic; or you can just use the easy sandbox mode with unlimited money/resources and just enjoy building something live. Prices of resources on the global market are changing over time as you play –one day you can sell or purchase steel for a $100 per ton, but in a few months the cost can rise to $200 or decrease to $50. The price of everything is connected to the cost of work and resources. Increasing difficulty. As prices change, the demands of the citizens also change, and you will need more resources to keep them happy and force them to work. There are, right now, over 30 commodities you can mine, transport and manufacture. If you want to get clothes you will first need to get resources to create a fabric, then you will need a clothing factory where the clothes will be manufactured from this fabric. You can then transport the finished clothes into shops where your citizens can buy them. Every commodity has a specific requirement,so if you would like to load oil into the tank train-car you will need a special pumping loading station. If you need to load gravel into a dumper truck you need a special loading station where the gravel comes from conveyors into the truck. Liquid resources like oil or fuel can be stored only in tanks, while resources like wood, steel, or prefabricated concrete panels can be stored outside in the open space. Using a crane for these will increase loading/unloading speed. Goods like clothes, food, etc. can be stored in warehouses. It is up to you to decide from where the workers will go into the factories. You can create residential zones and transport workers by buses or trains to industrial areas. You can also build residential buildings near the factories so that workers will able to walk to the factory. But don't forget that a worker will need to purchase food and enjoy their free time, so again it is up to you to decide whether to build those facilities near their home or whether you will transport them somehow to shops or places to spend their free time. *********** Here are some things you might find interesting. HUGE NEW FEATURE: API Resources (14/14) - Laravel 5.5 New Features

26:50
The largest feature to come to Laravel 5.5 is the API resources. This feature allows you to manage your JSON payloads for your API much easier. For those of you maintaining APIs in Laravel, you will begin to jump for joy with how easy this has become. Think of API resources like templates for your JSON payloads. In the past, previous versions of Laravel would run a simple json_encode on your model objects to return a JSON request. This meant you were outputing a direct mapping of your database (minus any hidden fields you defined). This is bare bones functionality and generally is ok for internal APIs but much more control is required for Public APIs. Thanks to API resources we now have an easy way to control the layout of our JSON payloads by creating a "resource" and defining the structure in the resource. I like to think of resources as "JSON templates". With these templates we can define the information we want in the resource and even create or combine information from multiple models or nested relationships. The video explains all of this in more detail than I can explain here, so be sure to check it out. ==== LINKS ==== Documentation on API Resources https://laravel.com/docs/5.5/eloquent-resources ==== MORE FROM THIS SERIES . ==== Full Playlist for the “Laravel 5.5 New Features“ Series: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwAKR305CRO8GY3HVpXShlrXab8Cd7VT_ ==== FOLLOW ME ==== Subscribe for New Releases! We’re starting this section from Wedding 05 and we’re going to look at Resource Leveling. The way we left things in the preceding section is that I had assigned the bride and groom to the tasks for which they have a level of involvement during the planning of the wedding. And we can see that both of them are significantly over-allocated, particularly during one period in the second half of December where they have a lot of different things to be doing all at once. You can see the specific tasks that are over-allocated with the indicator in the left hand column there in the display. And as I pointed out to you in the preceding section if we look at the Resource Sheet the two resources there that are marked in red are the ones that are over-allocated. And of course in something like this project we don’t really have the option of say having a couple of extra brides or a couple of extra grooms to spread the work over. In another project, such as for example the bathroom refit, if the tiler or the plasterer or the bathroom fitter had too much work to do you could possibly get a second person into help but that isn’t really an option for us here. Now one of the things that I mentioned in the preceding section, which is of course a very important thing to do, is to make sure that you have your default task type set correctly. Let’s just take a look at that now. On the Schedule page in Project Options in Scheduling Options for this project note that I have this project selected. So that’s Wedding 05. And the default task type I now have is fixed duration. Note also that I have the checkbox, New tasks are effort driven, is not checked. Now if I go back to this dropdown here, for all new projects my overall default is still a default task type of fixed units. So in the absence of a specific change for a specific project, that is if you like my default default it’s fixed units. You will obviously need to set that up in the way that suits you. It’s very likely when you are planning projects and as your projects progress that you will experience overallocation of resources and there are a number of ways of resolving these overallocations and we’re going to be looking at quite a few during the course. But before we do just one very important point to make is this. There isn’t some universal, if you like, panacea for overallocations. There isn’t one way of resolving overallocations, which is always the right way of doing it. The resolution of overallocations almost always involves understanding the underlying project, the underlying business, the underlying activity that your project relates to because you have quite a few, if you like, nobs and dials that you can adjust in order to get the best result when you’re resolving overallocations. Sorry, we couldn't fit the entire video transcription here since YouTube only allows 5000 characters.

ESS3A - Natural Resources

05:40
In this video Paul Andersen explains how the resources required for survival come from the Earth. The resources are not evenly distributed on the planet and neither are the humans. According to the NGSS we need to limit the use of nonrenewable resources (like oil and coal) through regulations and increase the use of renewable resources. A teaching progression K-12 is also included.
